Important Update: The Future of Blanton Elementary School
Dear Blanton Parents,
I want to share an important update with you regarding the future of Blanton Elementary and how we are working to fulfill our commitment to providing your children with the best possible educational experience.
At the Board meeting on Thursday, January 8, Trustees are expected to discuss a plan to potentially close Blanton Elementary as an elementary school at the end of this school year and repurpose the newest part of the building for another Arlington ISD purpose. It’s important to share that no action will be taken at the meeting on Thursday. The meeting will be livestreamed on YouTube starting at 7:00 p.m.
This discussion is guided by our District Values and Beliefs, specifically our commitment to providing productive learning environments. Several factors have led us to this point:
Learning Environments & Infrastructure: The infrastructure of Blanton Elementary is now 69 years old. While the campus has had partial renovations over the years, the Facility Condition Index indicates that the building's age makes it increasingly difficult to maintain the high-quality, modern learning environment our students deserve.
Declining Enrollment: Our most recent enrollment report shows a declining trend within the Blanton attendance zone. To honor our value of Maximized Resources, we must ensure that our district talent and financial resources are positioned where they can most effectively promote student learning and fiscal stability.
Academic Growth: Our primary goal is to ensure every student has access to the most robust academic programs and resources available. By streamlining our campus buildings, we can better concentrate our staff and resources to create the exceptional experiences that ignite a passion for learning in every child.
We understand that these discussions may raise many questions. Please know that our priority is supporting every student’s continued success academically, socially, and emotionally throughout this potential transition. We remain dedicated to our culture, ensuring every family feels valued and supported during this time.
Next Steps:
Ongoing Communication: Pending the Board’s discussion on Thursday, January 8, the district will launch a dedicated page on the Blanton website to house the latest updates and details.
Timeline: The 2025-2026 school year will continue as normal. The Board may potentially call for a special meeting prior to January 31 to continue the discussion and make a decision regarding the future of Blanton Elementary.
Family Meetings: In line with our belief that partnerships with families are the foundation of success, district leaders will hold an informational meeting on Wednesday, January 14, at 6:00 p.m., in the Blanton Elementary cafeteria. We will share next steps, including information about potential new school assignments, transportation, and support services.
We remain committed to open communication and walking alongside our families through every step of the process. You can expect another update from me after the Board meeting on Thursday.
Thank you for your continued trust and partnership as we work together to provide an exceptional learning experience for our students.
Sincerely, Matt Smith Superintendent Arlington ISD ... See MoreSee Less

Today we celebrated someone who is truly woven into the heart of Blanton.
After many years of serving our campus, Mrs. Perez is retiring. She has been part of Blanton for a long time—first as a bilingual teacher, then as our GT teacher—and in every role, she showed up with care, integrity, and deep love for students.
Mrs. Perez was the kind of person who always stepped up. If something needed to be done, she was there. She supported students, colleagues, and families quietly and faithfully, and she earned the respect of everyone she worked with.
Her impact can be felt in generations of students and in the culture of our school. Blanton is better because of her, and her legacy will remain long after today.
Mrs. Perez, you are deeply loved, appreciated, and forever part of the Blanton family. Enjoy this next chapter—you have truly earned it. 💙🦅 ... See MoreSee Less
